Book Briefs is a series which consists of short chapter-by-chapter summaries of great books. I am starting off with the Institutes of Christian Religion by John Calvin. Each post consists of a summary of the chapter and a question to think about (not from the book). Summary : The Scriptures obtain authority among people only when they are fully convinced that it has come from heaven and only when they are acknowledged to be the very words of God.  A destructive error that is common is that the authority of the Scriptures is given to it by the church. They ask: how can we be convinced that the Word of God is from heaven? How do we know which book to include in the Bible? They answer that the church has determined it. So they give the church too much authority and use it to tyrannize people. But if all the promises are dependent on man’s judgement, what would happen to the assurance of eternal life? Summary : So the prophet after saying, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speed, and night to night reveals knowledge (Psalm 19:1-2),” then mentions the Word: “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart (Psalm 19:7-8)”. Here he means that since God calls people in vain through creation the law is the school of God’s children. Psalm 29 has a similar end where after he speaks of God’s voice “in thunder” (vs. 3), “over many waters” (vs. 3), as “breaking cedars” (vs. 5) he adds that his praises are sung in his temple because unbel

Summary : Once we think about how the human mind is forgetful of God, prone to error and tending to make new religions, then we understand how necessary it was for God to give us a written word that would not be forgotten or corrupted. God has given the word to those he pleased because he knew that his witness in the universe is not sufficiently effective. The works of God are interpreted correctly, instead of by our depraved judgement, in his word. Without the word we will never know God. God’s face, which is called unapproachable (1 Tim 6:16), is like a complex maze into which we are led by the thread of the word.
